Childhood Memories
I've always had good memories of those chilly Autumn Halloween days as a kid, as I suppose all kids do.
But as a Christian adult, I find myself wanting to take a more serious look of this most celebrated holiday
and it's origin. The following article is information I've put together about the history of Halloween,
and ideas or alternatives as to how Christians might participate in this evening if you so choose, to help win souls for Christ.
As a child I remember the excitement in the air as that holiday drew closer. We each got to pick out our
very own pumpkin and carve into it whatever funny face we wanted. Then we'd pick our costume out at the
local dime store. When Halloween finally arrived, us kids would get more and more excited as darkness
crept upon our small town. We'd transform ourselves into little goblins of the night and run through
the fallen leaves from porch to porch in search of the best goodies. It was always a special treat if
we got a popcorn ball or a nickel in those days. At evenings close, we'd peel our sweaty masks off,
find a spot on the living room floor and dump our plastic pumpkins out, patiently waiting as our parents
inspected the goods. When the OK was given, there was no holding us back. Our only hope was not to get
tummy aches from eating too much that night.
Introduction To Halloween
Halloween doesn't seem to be going away at least anytime soon, and its practices of evil, occultism and witchcraft are here to stay. It's
a night of serious business for Satanists and witches and it's a festival of ghosts, skeletons and demons.
Americans have participated in Halloween for years with it's demonic faced pumpkins, witch brooms and gory
costumes and consider it fun. Parents even dress little Johnny up in a red devils costume complete with
pitch fork and tail. This sends a message to our kids that witchcraft, and the occult are fun and
harmless. That is wrong to do, as this is exactly what Satan wants us to believe.
As Christian's we shouldn't want our kids to get involved with it's practices. A lot of Christians simply turn out their
lights and don't answer the door that evening, ignoring trick or treaters all together. If that is your
decision on Halloween and choose not to get involved or encourage this holiday, that's a good decision. But this study is for those Christians who
"would like" to get involved to help spread the Gospel on this evening. Ignoring Halloween altogether can be a missed
opportunity when it comes to the things a Christian could be doing concerning spreading the Word of God.
I mean, what other night of the year do you have scores of kids coming right up to your door? There's
ways that they can leave your porch and take a little bit more knowledge of Jesus with them.
I'm writing this article to first pass along to you the history of Halloween. And second, to make some
suggestions for alternative ways a Christian can "participate" but not "celebrate" in this holiday. You and your kids can
take full advantage of it to bring folks to Jesus. The intent of this study is not to conform to the world and
it's ways, but to present methods on how you can win souls on Halloween if you choose to do so.
Halloween is not going away, at least anytime soon (I wish it would), but as long as it's here,
it is a great opportunity to witness a bit. The little girl dressed in a fuzzy bunny outfit running up to
your door has no idea of the background behind Halloween, but you can put in her little plastic pumpkin a booklet explaining who Jesus is that
she can read later. It may be the only time she hears about Him. Halloween has an evil history but there are ways that we can shed
the light of Christ on it. I think God would approve of us giving a piece of candy and a "Get to know Jesus" booklet
in a childs trick or treat bag.
