The Bible tells us repeatedly that God is one 1 Corinthians 8:4, Deuteronomy 6:4. God Himself said,
"I am the Lord, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me" Isaiah 45:5. Isaiah 43:10 tells us
"Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me." Isaiah 44:6 tells us, "I am the First
and I am the Last, Besides Me there is no God."
The Bible does not refer to God as playing 3 different roles because it clearly refers
to 3 distinct persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. People say if Jesus is God, then He must have been
praying to Himself while on earth. That is not the case because Jesus and the Father are both God but are also distinct Persons.
If we look at Matthew 3:17, we can see God clearly speaking of His Son and as another Person.
We see the Father sending the Son into the world in John 3:16 so He cannot be the same person as the Son.
And we see the Father and the Son sending the Holy Spirit into the world in John 14:26 and Acts 2:33 so
the Father and Son cannot be the same person as the Holy Spirit. The 3 are not inferior to each other but instead they all have equal characteristics
as power, love, holiness and knowledge.
The Bible also refers to God as plural as in Genesis 1:26,
Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness." See also Isaiah 6:8.
We also see a hint of the Trinity in Isaiah 6:3 where the angels cry "Holy, Holy, Holy" 3 times.
This plural referral is found in the Old Testament and it's not until the New Testament that God is
revealed in His Trinity as found in Matthew 28:19, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." All 3 are placed on the same
deity level. Notice that this verse uses the singular noun "name" referring to the 3 as one God, yet it clearly specifies
3 distinct persons.
The Father did not become the Son, who then became the Holy Spirit. There was never a time when
one of the Persons of the Godhead did not exist. They are all eternal. The Father is eternal as told in the
following verses Isaiah 9:6, Deuteronomy 33:27 and Psalm 93:2. The Son is eternal as told in the following
verses Hebrews 1:12 and Micah 5:2. Hebrews 9:14 tells us that the Holy Spirit is eternal. All 3 in the
Trinity have always existed and always will exist.
There are several verses in the Bible that show the Trinity coexists together.
A very good example is Matthew 3:16-17 where Jesus is being Baptized and the Spirit of God descended like
a dove and the Father testified of His beloved Son. John 14:16-17 is another good example of the Trinity
coexisting together. Here the Son asked the Father to send the Holy Spirit as the Comforter or Helper and
the Father answered and sent the Holy Spirit in Jesus name. In Matthew 28:19 Jesus speaks of the Trinity
by telling His disciples to baptize the nations and make disciples of them in the name of the Father, the
Son and the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:4-6 speaks of all three in the Trinity. Here it speaks of the Holy
Spirit coming into our lives building us up into one body or fellowship. It speaks of Jesus dying for us
in whom we put our faith for forgiveness and salvation. And it speaks of God the Father to whom we look
to for guidance. Hebrews 9:14 shows us that all three members of the Trinity had a part to play in our
salvation. Here we see it is the Holy Spirit who enabled Jesus to offer Himself to God as the perfect
sacrifice for our sins on the cross.
